The Stories Behind the Festivals
The National Day (October 1) and the Mid-Autumn Festival occasionally coincide, creating an extended celebration that merges national pride with family reunions. Here are some interesting stories associated with these holidays:
The Legend of Chang’e and the Moon
The most famous Mid-Autumn tale is the story of Chang’e, the Moon Goddess. According to legend, her husband, Hou Yi, was a heroic archer who saved the earth by shooting down nine extra suns. As a reward, he was given an elixir of immortality. To prevent a thief from stealing it, Chang’e drank the elixir herself and floated to the moon, where she has lived ever since. On Mid-Autumn Festival, people gaze at the moon to remember Chang’e and offer her favorite fruits and mooncakes.
Mooncakes and the Secret Rebellion
During the Yuan Dynasty, Han Chinese rebels used mooncakes to secretly plan an uprising against Mongol rulers. Messages hidden inside the cakes coordinated the rebellion, which eventually led to the establishment of the Ming Dynasty. Today, mooncakes symbolize unity and the sharing of blessings among family and friends.
National Day and the “Golden Week”
National Day marks the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. The week-long holiday, often called “Golden Week,” is one of China’s busiest travel periods. Millions of people return home or take trips to enjoy the autumn scenery, making it a vibrant time full of cultural activities, fireworks, and public festivities.
We hope these stories add a touch of magic to your celebrations. Happy National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival!
